Watch out for heavy traffic on Rt. 1 in CA. the shoulder is rather non-existant in many parts of CA. My guess is it won’t be nearly as heavy when you’re heading through than it is now- weekday mornings are also great times for this hwy as most traffic is from local vacationers. i’m sure all this is a minor concern in a truly one of a kind trip. of course local bike shops will be able to point you in good directions and there are many of them along the way through CA. Thank you Carsten; we might very well move eastward to seek out some backroads and less traveled country on our way south. We’ll still hit the major cities as we travel; we’re looking to do Habitat builds with most of the major affiliates along our route!
Not so sure about this. While there are sections (likely down South) that will have heavy traffic in the summer, Highway 1 is most consistently a 2 lane road with a decent shoulder, and has a well maintained network “bike route” bypasses for these sections. Just don’t want you guys to miss out on what is in my opinion one of the most beautiful roads in America. But of course, it all depends on the Habitat locations.

Thanks Trevor. We’ll likely start on Highway 1 somewhere in Oregon, and will only take it as long as its safe and relatively quiet.
We just drove from the Bay Area to / from the Southern Oregon coast on Hwy 101.
There was a good amount of bike traffic and had me thinking of you guys. There seemed to be a pretty good bike lane on the shoulder for most of it. The shoulder get’s tight in a few places, but I expect it will be easy going compared to what you’ve been seeing thus far.
I imagine you’ll jump on Hwy 1 where it starts at Leggett, CA and follow the coast when 101 cuts’s inland. It’s been a long time since I’ve driven that part of Hwy 1, so I can’t comment beyond to say that it’s pretty.
Let me know when you have a better idea of when you’ll reach CA.
How exciting!! My sister and brother-in-law took a similar trip in 2009 on a tandem bicycle and had an amazing journey. You guys will have them beat by a few thousand miles though, they started in MN. 🙂 Check out their blog at http://www.ericandchristie.blogspot.com/ , you might pick up some good tips or places to stop along your route. They just stopped in for a water refill here at Hatcher Pass Polaris in Willow Ak., about 60 miles north of Anchorage. Nice guys wished them good luck and a safe journey.

Note that US Hwy 1 is on the east coast.
In Oregon, your best coastal route looks to be US 101 – which continues on to Calif. CA 1 starts in Leggett – and you can pretty much stay on that until San Luis Obispo (with using some side streets south of Santa Cruz to avoid the freeway section there).
Boys, I am your mom’s cousin Anna from Velva. I just now listened to the 9:46 audioblog of their rest day in Cantwell…I think you would agree that we both would have rejoiced in the message your son gave that morning and the hospitality shown by the body of believers. Had a wonderful lunch at Red Robin in the Spokane Valley Mall on Saturday, October 8 with the ‘boundsouth’ boys. It was wonderful to renew my acquaintance with them. Nathan and Isaiah had been in Rosalia as toddlers and I had met David on an Oak Grove choir tour two years ago. The are truly inspirational young men. Jim and Eliz have done a great job of parenting. They were heading south through the rolling hills of Whitman County’s wheat country on their way to Walla Walla and then Portland. God bless them on their journey.
We are about 15 miles from the Columbia Gorge. If you ride from Bend to Portland, we would be right on the route as you would presumably be going “over” Mt. Hood. We would like to at least be able to say “hi” if we can cross paths with you–maybe even dinner out at an “all you can eat” place in Portland. And as I mentioned before, we would be happy to host you overnight. Our son-in-law is the pastor of a small church near where we live, but he and his family will be out of town on vacation this coming weekend. Our address is Boring–that could add some interest to your travelogue. 🙂
