Mailbag Monday #10

Today_we_continue our Mailbag Monday series…
Dear Isaiah,
How are you doing? is it fun working with your brothers? How long have you been doing this? My name is Marissa im in 3rd grade my favriote color is pink.
Sincerely,
Dear Marissa,
I’m doing very well, thank you! Doing this with my brothers is quite amazing to tell you the truth; it isn’t always easy and fun, but there is nobody else I would rather have with me on this adventure. We’re outside the border between Mexico and Guatemala right now, which is very exciting because it seems like just yesterday we entered Mexico from San Diego, California. This journey is going by very fast, that is for sure; we left from Alaska on our bicycles on August 11th, 2011. Five and a half months later, here we are! We have some big plans in the works; next week we will fly to Colombia to continue our journey on the South American continent. We will finish at the southern tip of Argentina in the city of Ushuaia at the end of May. I may have written this before, but the Argentinian flag is blue and white, and blue happens to be my favorite color (with green a close second)! Enjoy the rest of your 3rd grade year, Marissa! My 3rd grade teacher was Mrs. Jamsa, and I have always thought she was pretty awesome. I kind of miss 3rd grade, especially recess.
Sincerely,
Isaiah

Berg Brothers,
Did you know your great aunt Selma and great uncle Roy were missionaries in Columbia? They studied language in Medellín and served in Tunja. This was back in the late 40s and early 50s. They came home because of strife resulting in it not being safe to stay . I do not know your way of travel but if you travel near either of these two places wanted you to know that. So you fly from? And to? Holding you all in prayer. Carolyn, Mary and Mark were there also.

Hey Bergs,
I just stumbled upon your blog and, like the 3rds graders, am pretty caught up in your adventures. As a language educator and fellow world traveler, thank you so much for answering these 3rd graders letters. You are doing wonders for their cultural education and expanding their horizons outside of their 3rd grade bubble. Mil gracias y mucha suerte!
I am curious to know why you are flying to Columbia and not biking through Central America. Is it because of safety or the terrain?
Monica, we’ll address this in a forthcoming blog post from here in Guatemala. A short answer is neither; Guatemala thus far at least has been breathtaking (both for the scenery and the tremendous mountain climbs) and we had other plans that motivated us to fly to Colombia this week!
Yes, Guatemala is beautiful! If you need a tour guide I know just person. 🙂 My host son. He’s wonderful. 🙂 Have fun.
Hello Isaiah,
Glad to hear that you are going well. We finally had some perspiration here in ND on Sunday. There isn’t much snow on the ground where we are… the 40+ degree days melt it quickly. Here are some questions:
1) Does your sister (Marta, right?) every get mad at you?
2) Have you learned any Spanish that you could teach us?
3) Have you gotten over your fear of the cows and touched any yet?
4) Have you gotten lost on your trip?
5) We saw the picture of the “No biking”. Did you bike that road? Did you get in trouble?
Stay safe,
Ms. Stoltz’s Class
